About The Artist

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I am a young artist in an Independent Study Mentorship class, and am studying studio art. I've studied Advanced Projects 2D, 3D and 4D at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago over the summer, and have hopes to obtain a future career as a professional artist or graphic designer. Last spring I was a state and gold seal winner at the Visual Arts Scholastic Event.

I've always been interested fine arts, however it was my enrollment in a physics class that led me on a quest to reconcile two unseemingly similar mediums: art and science. The two are not so different as one may think. Throughout history the artist has attempted to describe his world conceptually with visual mediums, just as the scientist attempts to explain conceptual theories in physical reality. As Leonard Shlain states: "Art anticipates scientific revisions of reality." Both are languages, both attempt to explain reality, and both are most certainly beautiful. This project focuses on building a bridge between art and science as two mediums of expression. The works will be shown at the Centro Cultural Atzlan building in the Deco District of San Antonio, Tx on May 4th, 2007.

Set 7- Texture Saturday, January 20, 2007 |

These paintings reflected some of my first experiences with texture. Three were included in this set; one with heavy texture, moderate texture and no texture. Moderate texture won with a high number of bids at 13.

From here there is a myriad of directions that I can take. I'm contemplating doing medium as the subject for my next set. Medium has a huge scope. It can be anything as so eloquently proved by the Dadaists (thank you Duchamp). So I will have to take some time to think about what mediums to utlilize. There will probably be more items in this next set due to the variety of mediums available and the swift simplicity of some such as charcoal or watercolor. Look forward to an interesting set next week....

Texture is tough...
Set 7- one of my first experiences with major texture.

Set 6- Style |

Set 6 was a turning point in series. Here I chose to reflect style and did so by painting in three major styles; impressionism, 60's pop art, and abstraction. I tried to choose three of the most popular and iconic art forms that would be most readily recognized by the pubilc. The abstract painting won with the highest number of bids at 4.

This dimension marks the point where I begin to get less technical and little more conceptual. This is a mixed blessing. Because the paintings are becoming increasingly complex and require some elevated thinking, I may need to take more time to complete them. Many of the previous paintings were so techincal they seemed like exercises, but now with such mechanical restraints like color and subject defined, I will need more time to contemplate bigger issues such as conceputalism, form and medium, that is, if the public approves...

Bit of a break... Tuesday, January 02, 2007 |

(image from physical log, I brainstorm alot.)

Took a bit of a break due to the holidays and am now contemplating my next set. I will probably incorporate texture seeing as it is a good dimension to begin exploring with the "style" (abstraction) that was determined from the last set.

I have not done alot of abstract work in my studies, nor have I made textural paintings and I think this project is going to lead me into some new directions. Recently I have realized that with this project I am a prisoner to the norm. As an artist the only decisions I can make regarding my paintings are mechanical, or compositional. I can only choose from a series of rules that I have placed upon myself as regulated by the public through bidding. In this project the artist is removed from the artistic process and takes on the act of producing rather than creating. It is interesting to disect the components of a painting with selective restraint, and in a sense I have given my soul to the devil of the public. Such can be a metaphor for life itself, for society or religion.
