Final Painting |
Whew!
What more can be said? This final painting is a culmination of all the permutations dictated by the previous set. It is painted on Metal and will be for display and up for silent auction at the Centro Cultural Atzlan on starting Thursday May 4th- to June 15th.
Ironically this painting has a very primitive feel despite all the progressive elements within it. It seems as though I've accidentally made a statement here; despite our constant progress and evolution into what we consider to be superior beings we are still animals, held prisoner by the forces of nature. Nothing has changed.
Set 12- Tool |
This final set forced me to step outside my boundraies. For this set I chose "tool" and used a different kind of tool to paint each piece. The first was painted with body, only using my hands to create the image. The second used an unconventional tool meaning something that is not traditionally used to paint such as a paintbrush. For this image I fabricated a bizarre little contraption that drew with paintpens simultaneously. The final painting was create using a conventional tool, or in this case a paintbrush.
What is particularly interesting about this set is that it deviates so much from the first. Just as the artwork in this project has evolved and the subject matter has become increasingly more abstract and complex, so too has my style of painting. I've evolved as an artist along with the paintings throughout this project and this set is a culmination of pieces I would never have been comfortable using in the first place.
Unconventional tools won with the highest bid.

Set 11- Conceptualism Yes or No? Friday, April 27, 2007 |
This set explored the realm of conceptualism. It is my view that conceptualism has been a point of disagreement for many artists. Some believe that an art work must be beautiful before conceptual, and others feel that art must express meaningful ideas. It is my opinion that a truly successful work will incorporate both. However in this set I limited myself to one or the other.
This conceptual painting explores the idea of all the interworkings and small components of life that make up the mundane routine we percieve. Our entire perception of reality and essentially of boredom is resurrected from thousands of miniscule and intricate processes. This painting reflects that idea by placing a resolutely simple image in the web of an abstract DNA strand.

Set 10- Base Material Sunday, April 01, 2007 |
Here I experimented with different types of base materials such as metal (tin), canvas and wood. I had never painted on tin before so I learned alot regarding what can and cannot solidify on it. The paintings remain unconceptual and continue to portray abstract pretty things. The collage on wood was my favorite however in that it has good contrast between the paper and charcoal drawing. There's always at least one really good painting in every set. This set ran from March 11-16th and Tin base won with the highest number of bids at 8.
Set 9- Form Saturday, March 24, 2007 |
This set was posted on February 18th, and ran through the 23rd. It was a particularly interesting set as I took my ideas off the canvas, and employed them in different forms. I scuplted plaster (3D), painted a mixed medium painting on canvas (2D), and created a mobile (4D). The mobile was a step out of the norm since I used glass, and as a result discovered how easily it breaks. (I cut myself at least 10 times). The mobile did not turn out as I had envisioned it, but was definitely a worth-while experiment. 2D won out of this set, and in the next set I plan to explore base materials.
Set 8- Medium Saturday, February 03, 2007 |
This set explored medium. Due to the results of the previous set, I could only mediums that incorporated texture (which proved to be an interesting experience with charcoal). I created a painting in acryllic, charcoal, oil and mixed. The mixed media painting won with a high number of bids at 12. It was a basic collage on canvas with acryllic, ink and a metal attachment to provide color. Mixed media will be an interesting restriction in the future as I experiment with different bases and form. I think of all the possible mediums for this project, mixed media has the most potential, and has given the series an interesting and sharp turn.

Set 7- Texture Saturday, January 20, 2007 |
These paintings reflected some of my first experiences with texture. Three were included in this set; one with heavy texture, moderate texture and no texture. Moderate texture won with a high number of bids at 13.
From here there is a myriad of directions that I can take. I'm contemplating doing medium as the subject for my next set. Medium has a huge scope. It can be anything as so eloquently proved by the Dadaists (thank you Duchamp). So I will have to take some time to think about what mediums to utlilize. There will probably be more items in this next set due to the variety of mediums available and the swift simplicity of some such as charcoal or watercolor. Look forward to an interesting set next week....

Set 6- Style |
Set 6 was a turning point in series. Here I chose to reflect style and did so by painting in three major styles; impressionism, 60's pop art, and abstraction. I tried to choose three of the most popular and iconic art forms that would be most readily recognized by the pubilc. The abstract painting won with the highest number of bids at 4.
This dimension marks the point where I begin to get less technical and little more conceptual. This is a mixed blessing. Because the paintings are becoming increasingly complex and require some elevated thinking, I may need to take more time to complete them. Many of the previous paintings were so techincal they seemed like exercises, but now with such mechanical restraints like color and subject defined, I will need more time to contemplate bigger issues such as conceputalism, form and medium, that is, if the public approves...
